Rome Restaurant Week 2012
Restaurant Week is on again in Rome.
It’s when you get to try a surprise 3 course meal (for lunch or dinner) at some of the city’s best restaurants for a set price of €25. Drinks are separate of course.
More than 80 restaurants across Rome participated with some Michelin star rated places too (add a lazy €10 to the menu for that!).
By the time I got to booking I wasn’t left with a huge amount of choice.
In the end we settled for Tazio at the 5 star Boscolo Exedra hotel in Piazza della Repubblica – one of my favourite piazzas in all of Rome.
Not too shabby really!
My friend and I had to choose between a vegetarian, seafood or meat menu.
I chose the meat and my friend, the vegetarian. Here’s what we ate:
Compliments of the Chef:
Crema di patate con spuma di wasabi
Potato soup with wasabi foam
Le zucche Autunnale in 3 variazioni
Pumpkin served three ways (grated pumpkin and mint salad; in batter fried and parmigiana)
Pasta fresca alla don Mario
Home made spaghetti with a tomato concasse and pecorino Romano
Bavarese ai mirtilli con gelatina allo champagne
Bavarian cream cake with blueberries and champagne jelly
Pappardelle di Gragnano
Con zucca e porcini su crema topinambur
Pappardelle with pumpkin and porcini mushroom on cream of Jerusalem artichoke root
Filetto di maialino in crosta con mostarda di mele e gelatina di melograno
Crusted baby pork fillet with apple and candied fruit mustard with pomegranate jelly
Mousse di cioccolato con gelatina di mandarino , sale dell’Himalaya e Zabaglione caldo
Chocolate mousse with mandarin, Himalayan salt and hot eggnog
We were treated to a petit pastry selection to close the meal.
For €25 we got more than our money’s worth. But importantly, it was a really enjoyable (and delicious) dining experience in a stylish setting and with just the right balance of attentive but not invasive service.
It’s a great initiative to promote restaurants in the city and to give diners the opportunity to experience some places they may not have generally tried at an affordable rate.
I’m looking forward to next one – just need to get in a little earlier!
Restaurant Week is running until this Sunday and there is still some availability at some fantastic venues.
