Suburra 1930: Where cocktails and food meet
I do enjoy Monti neighbourhood and it’s certainly an area of the city I recommend to visitors. For many reasons really: 1) it’s right by the Colosseum, 2) it’s a cool locals’ hangout (especially in summer people spill out of bars and into piazzas) 3) it’s super pretty, and 4) it’s full of independent designer stores, bars and restaurants.
I recently experienced Suburra 1930. This stylish restaurant and cocktail bar has just undergone a revamp and their expertly mixed cocktails impress just as the menu does. On that, there’s a great selection of pasta dishes with some local twists, a decadent burger, street food snacks like a crumbed and fried anchovy ‘sandwich’ stuffed with burrata, and a number of baccalà (salt cod) dishes.I attended for a special pairing event that showcases the vintage Italian liqueurs of days gone by – vermouth, cynar (an artichoke based liqueur), Strega and more. The best part about it is that there are 3 more events to come and they are all open to the public. Each costs €18 per head and is fantastic value: you get 4 tasting plates (1 of which is sweet) each paired with a drink.
