7 different Carbonara experiences in Rome

Soccer, religion, politics. Day-in, day-out, these are the things that are debated along the boot-shaped peninsula that is Italy. But one thing causes more debate in Rome than any of these topical three. The age-old carbonara. How it’s made, where it’s best eaten, the number of eggs, pancetta (from the pork belly) vs guanciale (from the pork cheek), spaghetti or rigatoni, Pecorino Romano and/or Parmigiano Reggiano, whole eggs or a

3 new food trends in Rome I’m not loving

Ah food. Always the topic of such debate and this post might cause some too. Good! Because talking about food is fun – not as fun as eating it, but close. The food scene in the eternal city changes regularly. Like in all cities, places open places close, trends come, trends go. Here are three that get a bit on my nerves: 1) Ramen everywhere Guess what Rome? Japan called

Why Rome is the most instagrammable city (monuments aside!)

Very often I am asked what my favourite thing about Rome is. ‘Easy’, you think: the Colosseum, the Trevi Fountain, the Pantheon. Well yes of course, these are beyond spectacular and I love them all (not equally, but close enough!). But my answer is always, ‘the colours of Rome.’ Those ochre gold and worn orange walls. The magical light at golden hour, the blazing sky sunsets, the hanging green ivy

Suburra 1930: Where cocktails and food meet

I do enjoy Monti neighbourhood and it’s certainly an area of the city I recommend to visitors. For many reasons really: 1) it’s right by the Colosseum, 2) it’s a cool locals’ hangout (especially in summer people spill out of bars and into piazzas) 3) it’s super pretty, and 4) it’s full of independent designer stores, bars and restaurants. I recently experienced Suburra 1930. This stylish restaurant and cocktail bar

The day it snowed in Rome

26 February 2018. It will be a day I’ll remember forever. One I’ll look back at fondly in years to come. Not only because it was my sister’s birthday but because it will go down in my history as the first time I experienced a real snowfall. Yes, is the answer to the question I most commonly get asked: “Doesn’t it snow in Australia?”, “You’ve never seen snow before?”. Yes

To date, the initiative has seen 92 Michelin Star chefs, 20 restaurants, 55 events in Italy and 5 around the world (San Francisco, New York, Tokyo and 2 in Thailand), 110 expert judges (of which 12

Rimessa Roscioli: Wine tasting in the heart of Rome

Anyone who knows anything about food and wine in Rome will tell you that the Roscioli brand name is synonymous with quality. There’s the salumeria / wine bar and restaurant, the bakery (Antico Forno Roscioli) where you can get some of the best pizza bianca in town (FYI their recipe is in my book!), Roscioli Caffe for a quick sweet, coffee or lunch and Rimessa Roscioli – the brainchild of

Arrivederci Roma 2017

2017. World. Universe. You have been so darn good to me. As you all know, I round up every year here on HeartRome and each time it gets harder and harder to pack a whole 365 days worth of experiences into a blog post. This year as you can guess, is no different. And on a year where a massive dream project has come to life, where does one begin?
