Materia Cafe: Where design and good food collide

When I walked into Materia Cafe I felt as though I’d landed into one of those cool hipster cafes in Melbourne’s Collingwood. In fact it could have been Williamsburg in Brooklyn or Shoreditch in London. You get the drift. Hipsters rejoice! I do love the classic style you find around Rome, but when design spaces like Materia come on to the scene – and I mean not just a hanging bike and some funky tiles thrown together -it makes me happy (and feel a little close to my other home!). The fact that’s it’s owned by two young and talented Italian women Laura and Marta – makes me even happier.

As you can see in the images, Materia is bright, airy and minimalist and ooooh and ahhhh super cute. All the details – from the chairs to the light fittings to the magazines – are a feast for the eyes and then the menu comes out. Salads, gourmet sandwiches (I tried the brie, ciasculo pork sausage and fennel seeds – to die for!) and a few first courses like a soup of the day (today chickpea, carrot and thyme) and homemade pasta. Vegetarians are catered for and the sweets cabinet with decadent muffins and a super moist carrot cake got my tick of approval. Details:
